Wisdom teeth may need to be removed when they are impacted, painful, infected, damaging nearby teeth, contributing to gum disease, or unable to erupt properly. Even wisdom teeth without symptoms should be evaluated because problems can develop over time. An oral surgeon can review your exam and imaging to determine whether removal is recommended.
Most patients experience the greatest swelling and discomfort during the first few days. Many return to school, work, or light activities within several days, although complete healing takes longer and varies based on the number and position of the teeth removed. Following dietary, hygiene, activity, and medication instructions can support a smoother recovery.
You may be a candidate if you are missing one or more teeth, have adequate jawbone to support an implant, and are healthy enough to undergo oral surgery. Gum health, smoking, medications, medical conditions, and bone volume may affect treatment. A consultation and 3D imaging are needed to determine the best approach for your needs.
Not every patient needs bone grafting. It may be recommended when the jawbone is too thin, short, or weak to support an implant securely. Depending on your anatomy, grafting may be completed before implant placement or at the same appointment. The graft then heals and integrates with the surrounding bone to create a more stable foundation.
Options may include local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. The right option depends on the procedure, your medical history, your comfort level, and the surgeon's recommendation. Your surgical team will explain what to expect and provide specific instructions before treatment.
Contact the office promptly for severe pain, persistent bleeding, increasing swelling, signs of infection, or a dental or facial injury. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of consciousness, or a serious facial injury. Do not delay emergency medical care while waiting for a callback.
